So they gut it. And change it, and if it dies or is mutilated, that is a perfectly acceptable result, because they hated it anyway.

@Autumn The reason for this was explained to me. And I completely believe it. It's because all of these restaurant franchises believe they have no future. So they're making their properties as generic as possible to make them easier to sell.

I think you have something there. Some of this is aspirational.
Someone who enjoys watching a high ranking chess match is likely a player who wants to improve their own game.
Some folks who watch NASCAR are speed junkies that wish they could drive 200+ mph.
Many armchair quarterbacks / goalies are former athletes who can relate to the struggle on the field.
But I imagine most sports fandom is more about belonging to a tribe and visible consumption.
According to the Black Agenda Report (think NAACP), soccer's popularity (lack) in America is proof of white supremacy.
