nonprofit, co-op social media is like all other nonprofit & coop type things: they are rarely without controversy or tension because they are organized by people who were socialized in problematic hierarchies and doing their best to put different social patterns in play, but often failing.

failing is good because you have to do it in order to move forward, but bad because real people get churned up in the gears, and the churning hurts marginalized people worse

True, but walk in to your average tech startup. Not without conflict either. Humans are human, and co-ops at least let it out.

But are there particular cases you're thinking of? Is your instance a co-op? Social.coop has its problems but mostly it is a pretty congenial community.

That said, we have work to do in terms of diversity and accessible, inclusive culture.

@ntnsndr Why is diversity so important that you have to try so hard to create it?

Having people with diverse backgrounds and experience can make the community more wise and resilient. And if you don't get kinds of diversity you expect, it can be a signal that you are unintentionally making people feel unwelcome.
