For those keeping track, Alberta had an election last night. The United conservatives won a majority of seats vs. the socialist NDP. The province was a sea of blue except in the two largest cities where there was a strong showing by the nep.

Conservatives tend to be blue
NDP (socialists) are orange
Liberals (used to be center left, but now socialist too) red
Bloc Quebecois (separatists) light blue
Green party is green
PPC (right populists) are purple

Apparently the parties in the US didn't really pick their colors. It was an artifact of televised election maps where all the stations standardized on one set of colors.
