I used to be a moderator on a forum for a while and this is very accurate. Moderation was done according to the rules, and as a result we had assholes constantly testing the limits. That was some proper bullshit.
On the other side, though, IIRC before my time someone actually had gotten a lawyer involved due to a dispute with the moderators, so I guess there simply was no winning for us.

@volpeon it’s true but it ignores that you need rules that enforce a process on moderators too. Refusing to have basic constraint on mod behavior is also a smell

@sun @volpeon I am not quite as gung-ho as I was about getting instances online to share with friends after thinking about moderation (vis-a-vis my energy levels) the past few months.

I ran a BBS for years, well into the 2010s even, but I had way more energy then (and ran it by the BDFL model with hand-picked mods and a designated PvP area)

@clawfulneutral @volpeon it’s def true you don’t need to put up with rule lawyering. The giant list of rules forums exist as a reaction tho because of the also very common scenario of power tripping mods so like don’t allow either

I like my instances 3 rules:

1. I'm not your dad
2. You're not mine
3. This site runs off of parts scavenged from a roadside sign

Though since the site runs off of thin clients these days I guess I'm technically violating rule 3, probably.

@volpeon

  1. Don't upset the moderators.
  2. Refer to rule 1.

@breizh @volpeon True although moderators sometimes should be accountable, like when it's more than just a mere social space.
