FBXL Social

Random question; would it be possible to create a private social network inside Nostr, that has no contact with (most of) the existing population?

@strypey Yes, just start a relay.

@strypey Other people can start relays too with the same intention. And if they're gatekept against annoying crypto spammers (or whoever else you don't like) posting to them, then you have what you want.

@strypey Nostr people do a similar thing with paid relays. Because (so the theory goes) it deters spam to have to pay for the privilege of posting.

@strypey Nostr relays aren't like fedi servers. They don't communicate with each other. Users communicate with a bunch of them directly.

A private relay. Yes. Just need to have authentication to read and write.

So basically the same logic as charging per unit for electricity, or water, or landfill collection while not charging for recycling, to discourage waste. In all four cases, the logic is sound as far it goes, but it only works in a situation where everyone has roughly equal access to wealth.

In other words, not the world be live in.

Follow up question, what would be the advantage of this over setting up a non-federating fediverse server, or a Discourse forum, for that matter?

@strypey Self-authenticating data

Can you expand on that?
