I often have a recurring dream where for some reason I'm back in college (in a school I've never been to before), and I don't have a copy of my schedule, so I'm wandering around these huge hallways trying to figure out where the hell I'm supposed to be.

I think the dream is really about uncertainty. It's well established that when the labor pool shrinks, working conditions improve because employers end up competing for fewer workers. Stuff like the black death or large wars often have worker conditions and wages considerably improve on the other side.

That's why the shrinking worker population is so scary to the powers that be, despite the fact that their other plans essentially require it.
