I tried to warn people, the real world is harder than you think, humans are incredible for all the things they do.
Fbxl social is a pretty small instance, so the key I found to having a good feed is finding interesting people and following them, and then the more you follow the more you see, and the more other people follow you. It takes some upfront work, but eventually you end up with a good feed and some good engagement when you post. We're really relying on the greater fediverse to make the instance work.

Well, I mean, they're all working for organizations we know are directly working with governments to suppress speech the state doesn't like. Most people might hypothetically be a potential authoritarian, but these people actually are imminently making their living off of doing that right now.
I'm happy to tolerate them on fediverse as individuals (my Blocklist is still empty), but bringing their whole corrupt organizations with them seems like flying too close to the sun.
Don't get me wrong, in principle I agree, it's just I don't trust them. Nobody else does either which is why their ratings are collapsing across the board.

My instance is nothing like any of yours (36 users and counting, baby!), but I feel the same. The point is to be on the internet libre, not to get rich.

If you have hosting that only supports php and mysql, I believe friendica is more or less drop in. You upload it to your host and it'll more or less set itself up.
If you want to host using a home server, you can set up dynamic DNS to a GoDaddy hostname using the following link: https://www.instructables.com/Quick-and-Dirty-Dynamic-DNS-Using-GoDaddy/
If you're going to sell post at home, just be sure that your internet plan is robust enough. Your server is going to be constantly talking with other servers whether you are presently surfing or not.
