tbf, that's a direct consequence of the fact that tenants have overwhelming power under the law. Most places (and California and NYC I almost guarantee are at the head of the pack in this regard) give tenants so many powers over their landlord that you could just stop paying the rent and start filling the place with garbage and dealing drugs out of it and it'll take a full year to get rid of that tenant. Meanwhile you're on the hook for all the bills that rent is supposed to pay.
You won't find the most important sort of deep existential joy that'll sustain you on the Internet. There are multiple generations of people trying and failing, and it's tearing the world apart. Not saying you can't find things to like on the Internet, but it's spice, not the meal.

I started my blog with some software I wrote myself in php. Later I moved to one whose name I can't remember that was just a simple cms in php. Later I moved to drupal. Eventually I migrated to wordpress because it had some features I liked. I thought I could use activitypub, but ultimately it didn't federate so I disabled that feature and moved on with my life. It's got surprisingly decent performance and the fact I can post an entry right from the app is nice.
