For admins out there, you might want to look up tuned. It's a tuner daemon that looks like it can fiddle with your linux install to operate at its best. Started using it during the sunday peak paired with pg_repack and I'm down to some pretty decent looking load numbers. I've seen sub 0.1 this evening which was pretty surprising for a sunday night. It's in the ubuntu repository.
I think it should be really simple. Such people have often had important roles in the community, and people are starving for a return to real communities.
The white pill to me is that the population will shrink, and when that happens, the power of the individual grows. When the power of the individual grows, that's good for most people, even if the economy as a whole shrinks.
I think it's always important for us to remember that we don't get paid in economies, so if the economy shrinks because the population shrinks, you can have some really good stuff come out of that, including a huge increase in the potential to make sustainable economies. My son or his kids could have a really good future. In fact, we might even get to see the millennials and Gen Z catch it in their last few years.

Trying to think long an hard about what lessons to teach my son, I've also realized that we treat hedonistic pleasure as a virtue to pursued as a good in and of itself rather than a vice that feels good on the way to more deeply satisfying pursuits, those pursuits being what I like to call "building something". Building families, communities, making safe and comfortable places to live, it's all stuff you don't put a dollar value on, but it's so much more important than dollars and cents...
The west needs to either create a new ideological foundation in this regard or it needs to return to an older one, but if we continue on the nihilistic path we're on there won't be anything left. Eventually some other culture will come in and it will become dominant.

It wasn't even that long ago -- 2004 to 2006 -- that I rented a two bedroom place in a nice area of town with my brother for about 300USD a month. That wasn't some crazy underground deal, that's just what rent cost at that time. Since then, rents exploded along with house prices. That's kept the numbers rising so the politicians are happy, but it's kept a generation of young men living in their parents basements.
oof, so you're just trying whatever you can.
That's the sort of moment you want your e-brake to function for sure.

I wish I could disagree, but it's impossible to argue against.
The hatred that society has against stay at home mothers is a perfect example. All the data shows they're incredibly valuable for raising good people, but they don't make money so they're considered freeloaders. Really terrible state of affairs.

How so? It stops your drive shaft from turning, preventing your drive wheels from turning. that's independent of your brakes.
tbf, the parking pin on a modern automatic transmission is plenty to keep a car from rolling away, or it'd be a much bigger issue than it is.
Different issue if you're driving a standard, of course. Unless you just leave it in gear when you park.

I agree to an extent, but wealth is the symptom, the cause is there's just too damn much power floating around and so too many damn opportunities for corruption.
The richest people on earth were all put there by the US government, whose agents in turn get funded by the richest people on earth. It's a dog eating its own shit off the ground.

I wonder what chatgpt would say if you asked it to write a fact check that says the opposite of what it claims to fact check?
That's a good point -- the establishment has used the label of "conspiracy theorist" to describe things that turned out to be completely true a *lot* in the past couple years.
To the point that I used to immediately trust sites like snopes, but lately their articles have titles like "No, Bill Clinton does not have a red bike", and article bodies like "While it is true that Bill Clinton does have a red bike,[...]"
They've really been burning a lot of goodwill.

There's so many examples of long proven technologies that are being ignored because we need to chase stuff that's perpetually "just 5 more years away"
Electric streetcars are 100 year old technology, and they're basically gone but busses filled with materials mined by african child slaves are the new hotness.

Good models of the world are how you make little changes that have a big impact on your life. The powers that be aren't wrong that misinformation and disinformation are bad. The thing they're lying about is who is disseminating it. They want you to build models that benefit them so you impact them instead of yourself positively.
Something doesn't smell right...
I mean, money supply didn't shrink during Volker slamming interest rates up to 20%?! How?
