You can see this in action when someone from Southern California gets confused about European race relations because they apply the American conception of race to another region with a different conception of race. For that reason, applying current views to 1776 isn't really a meaningful analysis. Back when I was much younger I had a thing with a nerdy girl. It was a lot of fun, but it was also a reminder that there are more things to being compatible than just hobbies and interests. I ended up marrying a nice Christian girl (which at the time I did not see coming) because although she and I didn't share any interests, there were a lot of more fundamental things that we did share and that helped us get along very well.
What most people forget about both Greece and Rome is that a huge portion of the population was slaves. Greece in particular, for all their literature and philosophy, could only sustain that because slaves did all the work.

In terms of having a pure democracy, of course you can't have everyone voting for every decision, so in that regard it isn't a democracy and the founders of the US specifically didn't want a democracy.
In terms of *having democracy*, of course it is, people are quite often voting and those votes get to select who gets to run things. In some states, they even have ballot initiatives where people get to vote on specific measures.
But as a liberal, a pure democracy isn't what anyone should want anyway. If you let people just vote to make whatever happen then the majority can simply vote the minority into slavery. The point of a constitutional republic is first to have the constitution limit what the state can do so you can't just bring in tyranny, and second to have the republic soberly and wisely decide what is best instead of just having the masses clamor for whatever is good in the moment.
The move towards increasingly relying on polls rather than principle is dangerous in this regard. If political parties shut their brains off and just become the voice of the polls, then first of all why do we need politicians, and second of all presumably all it takes is whipping the populace up into a fury over something and you could get them to vote for genocide.

Around that time I went to the Ford dealership (because that's what we had, it as the middle of nowhere) and I looked at the F150 and it was too damn big, and then I looked at the Ford Ranger and..... It was too damn big, basically the same size as the F150.

Just finished watching M3GAN after seeing a recommendation from podcast of the lotus eaters. It was a good film.
One of the core requirements of a good thriller is it's a morality tale: The main character needs to do something to deserve what's coming next. Often, that's a man cheating on his wife or something of the sort. In this case, it's a woman's hubris and neglect of her niece so she could improve her career.
It spends a lot of time talking about society, and the effect of screens on children, and our fetishization of tech, and the tech cycle. It also hints at some of the threats of AI. A year ago, I would have scoffed at it, but seeing the power of ChatGPT, it's become real fodder for horror.
Ultimately, the main character realizes they did wrong and repent, and that sets the stage for the climax.
Overall, it was really satisfying.

It would be nice if the overwhelming success of this movie (it's made 10x the initial investment already) helps promote good filmmaking and original ideas.
