30 years ago lithium ion batteries had just been commercialized for the first time ever, so the journey from brand new niche experimental product to common commodity item of course led to a massive price drop as improvements to battery design, process improvements, and improvements attributable to scale took place, but past performance is no indicator of future returns.

Moreover, there are forces at the moment suggesting that the price of lithium batteries will rise. If electric cars become only slightly more ubiquitous, the demand for lithium will massively rise, raising lithium prices and thus the price of lithium batteries can't stay the same or fall.
