@Al_Rex tbf, if it was a free market, then all these pipeline companies could just say "hey, here's a bunch of money, who wants to sell their properties?" and then they'd be able to build a pipeline. Instead, every pipeline is a political favor from a bunch of governments to some big companies that make a bunch of political promises.

If it was a free market, there might be choices. Companies could choose how to price their goods without fear of regulations kicking in, some gas stations could go "hey, I'll pay extra to get fuel trucked in and charge a bit more during this emergency and there'll still be gas".

Basically, the market in the developed world isn't free, it's heavily regulated from end to end and it's further regulated by the threat of further regulation.
