There are two rules when dealing with wildlife: the first is that human beings are an apex predator and as such we should clomp around and make a whole bunch of noise whenever we're moving anywhere as if we're not afraid of anything, because doing that is likely to make sure that other creatures aren't surprised by your presence.

Don't feed it, don't pet it, don't poke it, it isn't your friend. It is tolerating your presence, and the moment it stops tolerating your presence it's going to bite you or slash you or whatever.
