They made it so people could take out all kinds of debt to go to school even if they couldn't afford it with the idea being that they'd make more money and be able to pay it off and be better off.

Nothing has changed, except now the people getting cheap loans also want the people who didn't go to college to pay off the loans, and they don't know why education and housing are so expensive. To this day you still hear the largest demographic at the moment saying that home ownership is a right and we need to make it easier to own a home.
