I found this video by Viva Frei very thought provoking.
I really enjoyed the Air Farce and This Hour has 22 minutes when I was a kid, and Rick Mercer was on the latter show. He had his segment called "Rick Rants" where he'd talk about whatever is going on at the moment. Later, he got his own show where he had a similar bit, and after the entire show finished after many years he released a book where he compiled his rants.
One of the rants was about how mean people were on the Internet, and how we need to put names next to people who are on the Internet. Personally, I'm a product of the Internet and I know that's a ridiculously stupid idea that will only result in the cancel culture we see today if you're lucky and that's all that happens. On the other hand, if you look at it from the point of view of this video, maybe they had this idea that if you saw the person has a real name instead of pussymangler69 you'd realize they're a person with a name too and maybe you'd treat them a little better. I think people who push vegetarianism do the same, they try to name cattle to humanize them.
I still think a lot of the people who pushed that agenda weren't naïve. Google and Facebook know exactly what they're doing, and they want that data point damn the consequences. But there's people out there who I can disagree with and respect them even though I think they're wrong.
