One thing I'm always worried about is people think that what makes a place "toxic" is "opinions I disagree with".

To me, what makes a place toxic is being afraid of speaking unpopular opinions for fear of someone doing something bad to you. Whether it's being banned, or much worse someone trying to track down where you live and cause you real harm in real life because they disagree with you, or worse yet when someone uses your unpopular speech to try to change government or international policy to hurt your entire class of people.

True tolerance is coexisting with people who aren't exactly like you in a variety of ways. It means coexisting with people who don't look like you, but it also means coexisting with people who don't think like you. That means learning to coexist with people who disagree with you. To me, the worst toxicity isn't people who disagree with you, it's when people actively try to hurt you because they disagree with you.

And no, just disagreeing with you isn't actively trying to hurt you, and just expressing their disagreement isn't actively trying to hurt you. Even if you really strongly disagree back.
