@wjmaggos C'mon man, we're gonna make asbestos mandatory in all homes!

Asbestos is safe! I worked in an asbestos mine last year without a respirator, no cancer this year! We need to trust the science and reject conspiracy theories about asbestos so we can end housefires!

@wjmaggos it seems to me that the key word here is choice.

The fact that asbestos was on the market and turned out to have healthy issues is unfortunate, but it would have been a million times more unfortunate if some self-righteous bureaucrat mandated its use. Same with thalidomide. It's of course unfortunate that it was approved for a use that turned out to be the worst possible thing, and thalidomide is still used for some important treatments, but imagine if the state stepped in and forced a generation of women to use thalidomide as their morning sickness medicine.
