The American press is not patriotic per se, I think they just don't like competition from people that they disagree with. If assange was a red commie, they'd be giving him the Pulitzer prize.
It's funny because to me, I had actually forgotten about the issue, but watching the Republicans close ranks and defend torture explicitly was one of those moments that I realized in 2009 that the Republicans were pure fucking evil. A lot of people forget some of the stuff that they did like that, and now that they've done some soul searching and found a different way to be people pretend that they were always like this, but no -- they had to take their licks and the leadership had to go into the desert for 40 years and apparently at some point someone had the bright idea of not being totally evil, and I think we're about to see that not being totally evil is a winning strategy.
I'm actually really looking forward to the Democrats getting absolutely trounced for the next couple election cycles, so they can wander into the desert and maybe learn the same lesson.

Unfortunately. Imagine if one of the parties could end up with a Thomas Jefferson in charge. Would change the world.
