Abortion/Canada
Also, the CBC should stop existing.

Imagine how many hours you had to work over your lifetime, so that we can pay them to set up some fight about American politics.

As if any of us need taxpayer funded American television. You know, just in case you didn't have enough American television from all of the other American television.

re: Abortion/Canada
If the CBC was beholden to taxpayers then they'd create content for taxpayers and lots of people would watch CBC. They're beholden to politicians and create content for politicians.

re: Abortion/Canada
I'll tell you a story my dad told me recently.

He was working in a mine in northern Manitoba in the 70s, and they only got a few hours of anything over the air. 4 hours a day of CBC.

They piped in classical music. For a bunch of miners. In northern Manitoba. (and farmers in southern manitoba. And oil workers in Alberta. And paper makers in Ontario)

There's newer stories, but I figure that one is appropriately illustrative of the disconnect between the CBC and the Canadians it allegedly serves, and has the benefit of temporal distance.

re: Abortion/Canada
The CBC owned and operated the equipment, so who else's fault would it be?

re: Abortion/Canada
They ran the only radio station in town, that only broadcasted for a few hours a day because it was a remote location.

re: Abortion/Canada
Because it's completely and intentionally out of touch with what any of those communities wanted.

They would never bother even asking what the community wants or what the Canadian public as a whole wants, because they're not accountable to the taxpayers, they're accountable to the politicians.

Rather than making stuff Canadians want, they make stuff politicians want. As long as you keep the ivory tower folks in Ottawa happy, the money keeps coming.

Data from the CRTC (another organization that needs to go away) shows the CBC has dropped to less than 3.9 per cent of viewership across Canada in 2018-2019. If 96% of all Netflix customers never watched it, many of them would cancel their subscriptions and the amount of money Netflix received would shrink dramatically. Taxpayers don't have that choice, and instead of the money going to the CBC going down, Canadians are spending more on the CBC than ever before, because the CBC isn't accountable to taxpayers, they're accountable to politicians.
