Half an acre is a 47m x 47m lot, roughly 150ft x 150ft. The US has 157,736,800 hectares of arable land (down from a peak of 190,000,000 in the 60s), and a hectare is roughly 2.5 acres. So you could actually have every man, woman, and child on a half-acre of land and still be able to let the population double.
Now, that's not saying that's actually practical environmentally, economically, or socially. On the other other hand, The federal government owns about 640 million acres of land in the United States.
(Of course, we have to talk about the Americans, because we're not going to take the land from the poor Queen! Poor thing, millions of square kilometers of land all around the world and millions of dollars is all she has left!)
