I run a social media site here in Canada. Several, in fact. Doesn't make me a millionaire or billionaire, in fact I don't run ads or ask for money. I do it because I want to have a place to be free to express myself.
The federal government is willing to regulate the internet. They're going to give themselves a veto over what is allowed to be on the internet. This is a violation of the law. It's obviously a violation of the charter of Rights and freedoms. The problem is that this government has shown that they don't much care for the charter. They will happily violate the law if it means I get to implement their massive violations of basic human rights.
I figure it's only a matter of time before my social media websites go away. They will be replaced by a crtc approved alternative, filled with CanCon that most certainly isn't anything I have to say, and will be and fully open for business when it comes to takedown requests from the government.
