Growing up, I heard "good news! You arent going to be shackled to a marriage, a home, a car, kids!"
I grew up sure I'd never buy a house, never get married, never have kids.
Well it turns out I kind of like being shackled to those things. In particular, my life has specific holes in it for my wife and my son that I didn't realize how much I needed them.
And my wife, she has similar holes that are neatly filled by me and our son. She was born to be a mom, and I saw her fill that void with pets, or by coddling adults who were the cause of all their own problems. Until he was born, then she became a mom, and it changed her life.
When something has been a truism for virtually all of human history, sometimes it's good because it's a long con, but often it's because that thing has worked for a very long time and trying to change it doesn't really make any sense.
