I agree with you in this regard, but it goes beyond just software COC, and to the fact that most Lemmy instances are run as authoritarian hellscapes where thou shalt agree totally with the admins or thou shalt be exiled.

That's true, since exploding-heads (while defederated from 99% of the lemmyverse) proves other people can host their own.
I think for now there's a "guilt by association" where since they're all like that everyone just assumes an instance running Lemmy is like that.
