I had a whole post written up earlier about this, but I ended up hooking up a Wi-Fi adapter to my new rg-36+, and some really interesting things happened. The updater seems to run ubuntu's apt update so even if the actual firmware doesn't get updated coming the operating system did. Besides that though, the updater also was able to pull the latest version of something relating to the emulation and all that.
When I went into libretro, it let me download the latest course and also download more cores. It was pretty interesting realizing that I could update so much stuff independently of the future of the specific firmware being used on the device.
One thing that was particularly interesting was related to a piece of software on their callex portsmaster. Rather than being a bunch of emulators, there are a bunch of Open source programs you could download. I wasn't able to get into portsmaster the first time because the internet connection I was on at when I was first testing this out was so limited, but afterwards I put it in and it was just very interesting the wide variety of options available. A CPU native Port of Grand theft Auto III and vice City is really quite interesting to me.
Another thing that I haven't been able to get running yet but I'm quite interested in is it seems you can run a streaming program on the handheld, so I could be laying in bed at night or hanging out in my back yard playing a video game being streamed from my PC which would massively open up the opportunities for a little handheld like this. Imagine playing something like cyberpunk on a console running a little rock chip because the horsepower is sitting somewhere else.
