I can't help but think that apartments in high density buildings could be the lowest cost and thus have people whose rent is directly paid by the government, multi family dwellings like duplexes and quadplexes would be one step above that where working class and lower middle class families might live, and houses would be for solidly middle class people and above.

The positioning would mean that unlike the poor whose government cheques are coming until the tanks roll on the capital, the people in multi family homes could end up either moving out or not paying anymore. In many jurisdictions you could be stuck with a tenant like that for a year or more, not making a penny for the whole time.

That's why the next stop after the multi family home seems to be a tent.
