On a geological level, the best carbon capture would be animals or microorganisms that form shells out of carbonate, and let the shells sit in bodies of water.

We know from geology that there's entire mountains of carbon captured in that way and it isn't going anywhere. By contrast, a tree will grow for maybe 100 years then die and rot, returning much of its carbon to the atmosphere.

There was a period where trees stored a lot of carbon, it's called the carboniferous period and it's where most of our coal deposits come from, but it ended once fungus learned how to eat cellulose, since the trees were converted into food that was eventually released via metabolism into the air.
