One of the interesting things about malls is that they were intended to be something that we actually need this day in age -- not just a place to buy things (but that too), but a social gathering place. The idea originally was that the mall actually was a place to hang out.

Of course, the commercial nature of the enterprise didn't really lend itself to authentic connection, but...
