Or that's at least how i get my average of 11750 steps every day. Some days i have even 25300 steps but never less than 6800.
Another thing is to set goals. Especially if you have time, find a place you've never walked to before and decide to go there. You want to be trying to push your limits all the time, and it's so surreal when you're walking places you've only ever driven. And then it becomes normal to walk to those places, and your world expands.
Helps too if you have a kid or a dog, they love being outside and it's healthy to go for a walk with them every day. They'll help you want to go out because they'll be so excited about going outside every day.
If you're worried you'll get bored, grab a podcasting app and download some podcasts while you're on wifi. There's more content out there released every day than there area hours in the day, so you can listen to something interesting for hours while you walk, meaning it's a physical as well as mental exercise and you don't even need to use data.

@CSB I live in one of several centers of Jersey City, across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It's not Manhattan-level dense here, but I can go for a couple of weeks without going further away than a 15 minute walk for shopping.
@CSB where do you walk outside, now? (Not names and coordinates -- what's the area like?)
I have a park 15 minutes away, and ~4 out of 7 days in a week I walk to the park, walk a few kilometers around it, and come back. Some of the other 3 days I walk to commercial zones and do errands.
@CSB I don't follow the same route through the streets. I found out my city has a new "Jersey City History Museum" by walking past it. Then I found out in the newspaper AFTER they had a 2-day lecture presentation about how most of our mayors have been utterly corrupt. If they had a sign out front, I missed that.
Anyway, if you wander, you find things.
