If you look at a graph, prior to World War 1, the state made up less than 5% of GDP in many countries. People were willing to fight and die for their countries even if they didn't fully understand what they were fighting for. Today, it has recently exceeded 50% in many countries during COVID, and they can't recruit soldiers for love or money. I know the world is more complex than one variable, but I don't think it's unrelated.
