Oh boy. Starting to see this stupid assertion come around again. Last time I saw it all over the place was Usenet and majordomo groups, but then it was about CDs.
"digital media should be cheaper than physical media because the intrinsic value you are getting is less and the only cost involved for the producer is the server hosting."

@NoBeret vinyl records are incredibly cheap to produce. They can be distributed through mail using media rate for nearly nothing.

It’s not the media that’s expensive, it’s the marketing and “overhead”

@NoBeret digital should be cheaper because there is often less "ownership" in practice

@ReadyKilowatt @NoBeret

Media mail no longer exists. Vinyl is not as cheap to produce as you think since it's still a niche at this point. CDs cost somewhere around $1-5 each depending on the pressing, book, and colors. It still costs $7 to mail either to someone, at a minimum.

Yes, digital media should be cheaper. No, that's not why it sucks.

@NoBeret

"the intrinsic value you are getting is less" seems like the bottom line to me.

The lack of control is another point. You do not control your media; someone else does. It is a zero-sum game.

Drm-free media is worth a premium imo

Of course, since that often isn't an option, people often get it at a steep 100% discount.

I'd like to add more complexity:
Ownership that is mediated through a third party isn't.
Media I can only access while I maintain the good graces of the party that actually owns it has the least instrinsic value.

@sj_zero @NoBeret

My experience is a bit different because other than a few Yes, Led Zep, and AC/DC albums, I do not listen to normie music.

In classical and metal however piracy is not only a non-issue, but a genuine good. If someone has not heard something great, piracy introduces them to it, and they tend to go out and buy it.

Otherwise how would you know that Ancient is better than Isvind? The names are cryptic.

In the same way, to appreciate a classical recording requires seeing how its conductor, orchestra, and production team did... which means hearing it first.

Try before buy. Enforce natural selection.

Very true, like all those people who lost part of their media collection when Amazon did not renew its license with the copyright holder.

@ReadyKilowatt there are plenty of things that go into the price, starting with what the owner feels like charging
