I use a proxy app to view Youtube videos, so at least Google isn't easily tracking every video I watch.
I also host and use #peertube... but I acknowledge that Youtube has dominance when it comes to where people go to view and post videos.

On that point, it's very obvious that a lot of the views & viewers on YouTube are simply there to be there, or are fake. I think it's high time we accept that they aren't really quality participants. Yes, many will lose money, but they were simply shouting into the void and advertisers were paying for it. WE were paying for it.
It's a golden handcuffs problem. It will hurt, but once they're off, creators can grow stronger. Right now, one change & money lost.

With real viewers, systems like peertube will thrive.
Also, I truly believe that peertube needs to implement some ability for users to support a channel by sharing the bandwidth. Especially when not at home or on the site.

Viewers only "help" if they leave the page open. I want to support so many, but I can't set something to just sink and help stream a channel's videos. The only way to do that is to set up your own peer tube server and have their server accept yours as a peer. You can't just have the video and seed it, like regular bit torrent.
