We need a separation of science and politics

@Hyolobrika During the pandemic lockdowns, government was overrun with advisors who we now know overdid the message of how bad things were. I agree science, and scientism, should be separate from the state.

I mixed up my words. I should have said "politics", not "state". But one is more general than the other so your point would still stand.

oh great. I know what's gonna happen now

@jeffcliff Sir Chris Whitty was one such scientific advisor for the UK Government. He has admitted to the ongoing COVID Inquiry that they did overdo it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8e9dLjgnmw

@Hyolobrika

@jeffcliff The difference between what I'm saying and what you're saying is that I am relying on what people who were actually involved in policy decisions have said they did. You are giving an opinion, of which you have the right to have.

Let's return to what the OP intended. I used the UK pandemic response because it was a prime example of scientism (the other being Anthony 'I Am The Science' Fauci) overshadowing the state's ability to govern.

@Hyolobrika

Question for you Jeff.
Who would you wish to get Covid?

Very humanitarian of you. 😉

Even people you hate you wish them good health.

@jeffcliff As you've edited your post after I posted, I will respond and not engage further.

I've had COVID, despite the three jabs I was required to take to remain in my dietitian studies. I could not predict when or where I would get it, the same for colds or chest infections. I have to live with the fact COVID will not disappear overnight instead of keeping myself under a self-imposed house arrest because a virus might get me. You can thank our close contact with animals for a lot of the common viruses in circulation.

I cannot respond to your second edited paragraph in good faith. My 'plague nation' followed whatever the WHO believed was true, including allowing China to cover up the fact there was an outbreak. Resorting to emotional rhetoric is not something worthy of any more thought or attention.

@Hyolobrika

So if isolated maybe in a private island then will it be ok?

But where's the fun in that?

Make it Survivor Covid edition.

1000 contestants, 1 vaccine
Who will survive?

@Hyolobrika They already have that in the US, doesn't look promising.

@admitsWrongIfProven What's wrong with it?

@admitsWrongIfProven And they don't, apparently. People still bring politics into science.
I meant separation of *politics* and science, not just government.

@Hyolobrika Oh, you mean keep politics out of science. Yeah, that makes sense.
Your original statement could be interpreted to keep science out of politics.

@Hyolobrika @admitsWrongIfProven

A significant fraction of scientific pursuit in the US is funded by government, and therefore highly politicized (which in this case often means having a militarily-useful goal).

I really don't want politician-style funding picking between scientists any more than I want them picking which churches are best.

@john @Hyolobrika The old question how to pool our resources... no good solution in sight.
