obviously, some homeless people are not bad people
@georgia @iwillbite i hate seeing homeless people but my hatred is directed vaguely at the circumstances and systems that made them homeless, and that neither the state nor charities manage to allocate enough resources to get them back on their feet. because just giving them money, drug rehab and a minimum wage job if they’re especially lucky won’t do it. making them do all the reintegration work as if they have only themselves to blame while they’re still just barely managing to survive won’t do it.
i’m only scared of what they might do in their desperation (if they’re not already tweakers or alcoholics). treat someone as less than human for long enough and that’s what they become.

@anemone @georgia @meowski@fluf.club @iwillbite i’ve had a small glimpse of the west coast situation (a few areas in seattle) and yeah, i wasn’t used to that. definitely scary, seeing people convulsing on the ground while everyone ignores them because helping is strongly discouraged, the screaming at every street corner, tweakers yelling at or attacking others entirely unprovoked, the constant sirens in the background, people nodding off on the subway, groups of black people threatening anyone they see…
but that definitely is a result of all the contempt poor and homeless people are being treated with by the rest of the world.
there’s a drug rehab center with a methadone clinic near where i live. it’s right in the middle of kassel, and you can see lots of (though not nearly as many as in seattle) homeless people and drug addicts there. but if i had to make an estimate, about 19/20 are really nice people who are always really happy to just have someone to talk to who will treat them like a human being.
the worst i’ve experienced there was an immigrant persistently gesticulating and saying something in a language i didn’t understand until a woman who was sitting next to me at the tram stop threatened to beat his face to a pulp in german, which scared him off before i could figure out he just wanted my (probably way too small) gloves…

Once it was money, but I was still worried the story he told was a lie and he was just going to buy drugs with it.

worried the story he told was a lieit often is! but why do you care? what they do with the money is what they need to survive, and surviving is all they can do on their own.
