Generally yes but if it's a friend of yours I'm sure they're not cooked. I just don't leave the registrations open so bad actors can't get in. Let me know when you want them open and I'll take care of it.

What server are you running ? Is synapse still the only game in town ?
I run Synapse, yes. Other people still use IRC and XMPP but I went with Matrix because I'm a glutton for punishment.
I always like to mention matrix-conduit. I've been using it, and it isn't perfect but it uses orders of magnitude less resources than synapse. I host mine on a lntel atom d2550 that runs a bunch of other things too.

Synapse can use a considerable amount of resources, for sure. It's not perfect but the Element HQ team seems to be keeping up with a lot of new quality of life and feature adding. They intend on adding VOIP and conferencing solutions baked in rather than the patchwork of Jitsi and a turnserver that we currently have to use. I'm looking forward to it.
