Not to mention, "Oh, the candidate you're gonna vote for probably isn't going to change anything anyway" maybe not, but at least you tried. You can say at least that much, even if you got it wrong. History is written by those who show up.

In 2021 Canada had an election, and the candidate that I voted for didn't even close to win, a party that that candidate was a part of ended up doing surprisingly well in that election, and I strongly believe that in spite of not winning the election and had a strong impact on the politics of the nation moving forward. One of the big parties ended up with a much different candidate shortly after.

Honestly, I do recall hearing about certain elections where the third parties made a difference even if they had no chance of winning. But let's say that your candidate managed to get 10% of the vote. It's a big thing to expect, but it is possible. At that point, both political parties will be paying very close attention to what they need to do to try to get some of that 10% of the vote, because that would be election-winning.
