Sometimes people say to me "You should start a blog!"

Let me tell you how running a blog works: You write something, and then a bunch of russian bots come in trying to sell shit on your website. It's boring. I'd much rather interact with people here on the fediverse, occasionally popping out a big effortpost.

@sj_zero People who say that only mean "I don't want to read that much text" anyway.

@DrFell @sj_zero The grifter market is already saturated.

Depends on the software you're using, but wordpress has a comment section.

@sj_zero I had one for a while but I disabled comments on it for exactly that reason. I think comment sections are kinda outdated in the age of Reddit / Hacker News / whatever; people can just comment there.

The problem with my blog was that it was specifically about one thing and then I more or less stopped doing that one thing: http://playwithlua.com .

@sj_zero I moderate a forum for an open source project (one of the ZFS versions). It is a continual game of whack-a-mole to weed out the SEO (search engine optimization) spam posts, which now are all AI-generated. Their favorite game is to embed a link in text the size of a period - you can’t see it, but search engine crawlers that look at the source of the page pick it up. I think most of ours comes out of Asia, probably China.

That varies from blog to blog. A lot of Hugo/Hexo/Astro/Zola themes don't have blog support, so that's a good idea...?
