You know, I think you're on to something with that train of thought.
I think a lot of the things these folks are projecting their anxieties on are just because it's easier to think there's one bad guy responsible for everything going on than to think about the fact that if you want a home you probably wont' get one, if you want a family you probably won't get one, if you want a community it's impossible to engage with one, and it's a result of a secular cycle (Secular cycles here refer to very long term cycles in civilizations) we're at the end of and there's nothing you can do about it.
I think the histrionic reaction to climate change (which we measure in at around 1.4 degrees per century) is another manifestation of the same thing. People feel deep anxiety in a world where almost nobody is hitting basic life goals, and so they find an acceptable outlet for that anxiety. The level of terror expressed by some people is not commensurate with the actual urgency of the threat, but it's something to focus on other than the real problems people face that don't have a simple face.
