In the town I grew up in Sweden, the mom of one of my classmates had a diesel-fueled Mercedes that smelled of cigarettes inside, so clearly she was smoking a lot while driving.
Also the hairdresser's smelled of 50% hair products, 50% cigarettes.
But most of the people I met on a regular basis didn't smoke. Some of the office ladies at the power company smoked, but the male technicians mostly didn't, they all had Swedish tobacco snuff under their lips instead.
@clacke The show presents them smoking about as much as the '70s. It was starting to be less constant smoke on the West Coast by the '80s, but like many things they lagged a bit in Midwest. And they miss some cultural cues by a few years on the show.
