According to Bloomberg, the auto industry tariffs are going to add $2,000 to the cost of a new automobile.

So how about the other $50,000 most new vehicles are overpriced by?

@sj_zero In the US, it's governed by the "If it saves one life" and knocking over apple carts and grabbing what you can principles (last metaphor from Jim of Jim's Blog). Plus the policy of enforced energy poverty which started in the 1970s.

So apropos of the first, all passenger vehicles or the like must have a big LCD screen on the dash and camera(s) in the back to help you see if you're about to back over a child.

1970s also required passive WRT to the front passengers restraints, which universally became airbags. Except the insane harridan in charge of this required they be so powerful they'll outright kill short women and children, so that they'd also maximally protect those who refuse to wear seatbelts (and I knew a short-ish woman who's jaw got busted by one in a minor parking lot accident). And, yes, she was told by auto manufacturers this is exactly what would happen.

"5 mph car bumpers" save on auto repairs, but by now have to add a couple of thousand US$ to the price. I can go on and on ... also see the chicken tax: Which again due to bad regulations make it hard to sell smaller pickup trucks.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @sj_zero Don't forget CAFE, which adds huge amounts through mandating ever-increasing mileage, which requires ever more esoteric technologies to implement (or the fines, which a number of cars already have included in the prices).
