@phnt Ive been running OpenBSD on my desktop. I feel like its the last outpost.
@ins0mniak Yeah, I've been trying to run it on more servers and I feel in a similar way. FreeBSD for when you need big server Linux things and OpenBSD for something small and simple that just needs to run.
For desktops I don't really now. I didn't try BSDs on my laptop yet and something tells me none of them will like the Intel WiFi 6 chip.

@phnt Yeah always a pain on laptops. I got that macbook now, I kind of just surrendered on that front. If I'm out and about I just need something to work immediately.
I use an Odroid h3+ for my desktop and it runs great out of the box which is where I spend most of my time.

@ins0mniak I've also surrendered on laptops. I can't get the business class Leninovo laptops from businesses for cheap-ish and I'm not paying the retail extortion pricing for those. Probably also buying a CrapBook as my next laptop, since Framework turned out to be a joke.
Or I might completely give up on the laptop side, if I get my hands on a Devterm.
Or I might completely give up on the laptop side, if I get my hands on a Devterm.
@phnt Lenovo quality has gone down hill man, last one I had melted lol. like the casing was legit warped from it.
My thing about laptops is most of the time im just shelling into something, be it work or my home so really it kind of doesn't matter to me at this point. Hell, I can do a lot just on a tablet or something.
P is a big fan of the devterm, tho its crazy trying to get one. the wait time is so long.

@phnt @ins0mniak I'm sad that i will move to a macbook most likely because I would've preferred a gaming laptop but if the OS is annoying... then it's a bruh moemnt
@mischievoustomato @phnt I actually kind of like it, tho I dont do much with it really. I mean it does what I need and its conf enough.
I do like the garageband stuff tho thats really fun to play with

@ins0mniak @phnt i will like the macbook its just that its sad that i can't really like other machines because of OS.
@mischievoustomato @phnt I hate windows so hardcore man.
Im an avid gamer too but I just said screw it and got a console because I don't feel like dealing with it
Im an avid gamer too but I just said screw it and got a console because I don't feel like dealing with it
@ins0mniak My main system is a Leninovo Yoga and the keyboard basically failed on it after 2.5 years of barely any use. It's riveted into the top case and they didn't sell those at that point anymore. It's a complete joke. Their ThinkPads also had barely replaceable keyboard at some point, but they've reverted that recently.
I've been wanting to buy any devterm model for months, but I haven't seen it in stock since before new year. I think they don't even bother manufacturing their older devices once they release new ones.

@phnt Those yogas look so cool lol. Im a sucker for that kind of thing but I don't know what Id do with it. Did you put linux on it? I tried getting it to work with a foldable once and it was a nightmare.
My last thinkpad worked fine for about 2 weeks and then went into an endless boot loop. I tried everything including reinstalling and no go.
I loose patience with stuff like that real fast.
Yeah I ordered a uconsole. Worked ok for a bit then the pi board died, I replaced it and it was all kinds of issues.
I ordered it and it took almost a year to get shipped!
idk a lot of those hacker things are cool in theory, pinephone for example but in practice I find them more frustrating than not. Fun to play with but Ican't use them day to day.

@mischievoustomato @ins0mniak My Linux setup is pretty comfy and stable, but basic shit like copy-paste breaking after updates is completely inexcusable. Or you know Pipewire destroying my music for the hundredth time with buffer underruns, because muh small audio buffers for low latency.
@phnt @mischievoustomato One thing I will absolutely say about apple is their sound quality is fantastic.
@ins0mniak @mischievoustomato I can't be a console player, no way I'm paying for AAA slop these days :D And if I play something, it's usually 20 years old anyway or never received a console port since it's been made by one guy.
@phnt @mischievoustomato ha I got a ps5 and I use it to play almost nothing but ps2 games on the tv. lol
Tekken 8 yeah
not much else.
Tekken 8 yeah

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato I keep meaning to try out this PS2 emulator for the Raspberry Pi, but my Pi's hard drive DIED yesterday.

Hmm, but there are references to Canadia, which means this is a psyop because Canadia does not exist.
Ask @PNS -- he will deny it, which is how you know it is true. Canadia does not exist.

@Forestofenchantment @phnt @mischievoustomato oh shit! Did you use the dc card or get an ssd?
pi is great for ps1 era games. I don't think its there yet for ps2 tho

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato It was an external USB hard drive that I've had for probably a decade now.
@Forestofenchantment @phnt @mischievoustomato oh yeah. best way to go is attaching an ssd, disk speed is way faster.
@ins0mniak @phnt a friend i have did this. i also play games that have native mac ports
@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato disc speed isn't important when emulating games. The PS2 had like a 4x DVD drive; yo mama could read data faster than that!
@mischievoustomato @phnt ps2 games run great on mac man.
I almost did that. Downloaded the ISO and everything. But then I installed OpenMandriva first and am kind of liking it.
I wonder if OpenBSD will run on an old macbook pro 10,4
@lord_nougat @phnt I know some linux can run not sure about bsd...would be rad if it worked.
@phnt @mischievoustomato @ins0mniak copy paste drives me fucking nuts, its the only real issue i have with wayland
i havent noticed issues with pipewire (aside from the crackling under load on fresh installs because i forgot to tune the quant because that's like, a totally normal and acceptable thing for a desktop end user to need to do). have you considered drinking to slow down your perception of latency, allowing you to increase the latency you set?

@lord_nougat @phnt yeah I got one of those new 16g pis and I slapped an ssd on it. its been really nice.
@ins0mniak I've used it for drawing, but not much anymore. Tablet mode on Linux is a joke. GNOME couldn't figure out what an on-screen keyboard is and when to enable it. And KDE was serviceable, but KWin had some scaling issues and virtual keyboard was painful to setup in a way that didn't break fcitx5 in my dwm setup. And changing the virtual keyboard layout to QWERTZ was impossible to do. Also you need some sensor daemon to listen on the angle lid and accelerometer sensor which sends D-Bus messages when it should rotate the display and whatnot. Basically a duct tape setup all around.
But everything was working properly. The worst issue I've had, really, was Arch not booting since it couldn't find the SSD thanks to Intel VMD being enabled and not having the modules for it in initramfs. Also getting working audio required sof-firmware. Sometimes when I open a game and CPU gets warm, it hard-locks but that's all the hw issues I've had except the failed keyboard.
>Yeah I ordered a uconsole. Worked ok for a bit then the pi board died, I replaced it and it was all kinds of issues.
I don't like the uconsole for many reasons. No fan on the Pi while trying to use the aluminium case as a passive cooler. And the keyboard is too small. I would say even the devterm keyboard is small, but is at least usable. The uconsole is basically a bloated phone.
My ideal on-the-go computer would be the devterm, but in those Ti Silent serial terminal bodies which have a more-or-less full keycap size keyboards (picrel)
>hacker things are cool in theory, pinephone for example but in practice I find them more frustrating than not.
They are devboards with screens attached basically.

@ins0mniak Also I might do something with my Pi 4. I've installed a custom image of 9front of it a long time ago, but didn't do anything fun with it.
@phnt Yeah and thats the thing man, like I can't tear a whole two days out of my calendar to screw with it. Id love nothing more than to have a lappy like that but its just not going to happen.
I like the pi a lot but its good for some things and other thing not at all. I think you could maybe use the 16g as a desktop type replacement but its not really ment for all of that.

@lord_nougat @phnt yeah I had to discipline myself from buying too much random shit.
me with a cred card at a computer store is a disaster waiting to happen

@phnt I have one running it, its pretty nice it has some weird keyboard issues, I had to dig out an old usb keyboard thats clunky as hell but other than that its cool.
It runs on my 55 inch tv lol, thats a blast man. big ass screen with 9front ha
It runs on my 55 inch tv lol, thats a blast man. big ass screen with 9front ha
@ins0mniak @phnt thank you baded apple
@mischievoustomato @phnt the mac in conjunction with my servers and desktop is pretty nice
@ins0mniak I don't even thing the Pis have accelerated Xorg, which is a hard requirement for a desktop replacement. Unaccelerated Xorg runs like shit on those ARM CPUs.
@phnt yeah they all try to get you to run wayland. you can switch it easily with the config utility but it can cause issues. wayland breaks things like screenshots and other minor but really annoying ways.
@warmbeverageenjoyer @phnt @ins0mniak I haven't had issues with copypaste, but pipewire did do a dumb change regarding latency, can be fixed at least. yeH, the quant.
@warmbeverageenjoyer @ins0mniak @mischievoustomato I've set it to 4096 a long time ago from the default 512 or whatever it has. Sometimes pipewire updates and it's just not enough. I've also set the min/max to 2048/8192 just in case, but it doesn't do anything. Pulseaudio at least dynamically changed the latency window when it detected an underrun, but Pipewire doesn't seem to do that competently.
@phnt @ins0mniak it's been accelerated for a while now
https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=64801
@ins0mniak The desktop used Openbox like a year or two ago, so I guess they switched to something else if the have Wayland support.
@phnt yeah its openbox.
@ins0mniak @phnt @warmbeverageenjoyer it worked fine for me but currently pipewire is fine after i fixed the latency
@jae @ins0mniak I wanted it as a portable SSH machine for working on servers without needing to get my large laptop. It's also an ideal size for use in bed. But honestly after waiting to see it in stock for 8+ months, I don't know if I want to buy it and wait another 6 months for it to show up.
There are some fixes in their forums for some of the issues if you have access to a 3D printer, but having to fix their flawed design doesn't spark confidence.

@ins0mniak @phnt @warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato theres a reason some distros don't even have it in their repos...
@ins0mniak @phnt I'd like a 24gb air with at least 512 storage
@ins0mniak @jae Most of these gadgets are basically toys for hardware hackers. And I can completely understand that. Hardware bringup is fun.
Clockworkpi are one of the few which makes actually usable products, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

@amerika @ins0mniak It's the most complete Linux-esque system after all. The other BSDs are lot quirkier.
@mischievoustomato @phnt yeah I should have gone with the 1tb drive in hindsight
@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato mine is the base model m4 I keep all my stuff at home in a NAS for extra storage
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato i do as well but I like playing with the garageband and such. when you start downloading the sound packs for it it gobbles space like no other.
@ins0mniak @phnt yeah deffo. I'd go with a pro even if i had the money eh
@mischievoustomato @phnt i might get one at somepoint. the m4 air is slick as hell, imagine how nice one of those pro m4 max lappy is.
@ins0mniak @warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato I've basically traded easy audio routing capability for a somewhat competently designed audio buffer system.
@ins0mniak @mischievoustomato @phnt I’m retarded it’s the second one up so it has 16GB of ram and the 512GB ssd
@ins0mniak @phnt super nice
@mischievoustomato @phnt Have you seen the max specs on those.....ooooh
@phnt @ins0mniak @mischievoustomato oh gotcha, I think I misread initially
Also I have no idea what I'm looking at. And do you have 10 sound cards? 🤔
Also I have no idea what I'm looking at. And do you have 10 sound cards? 🤔
@warmbeverageenjoyer @ins0mniak @mischievoustomato It's a virtual patchpanel. Something you would normally see on a JACK setup, but Pipewire was built to support this. It allows you to pipe one audio input/output to multiple applicatons/devices without needing to setup a bunch of virtual null devices in pulseaudio.
The reason why there's 4 playback devices and 4 input devices is because Intel is retarded a bit. The speaker/headphone input/output and all three supported DisplayPort input/outputs are exposed as separate devices.

@ins0mniak @phnt i have a friend with the m2 max, crazy to think aboyt
@mischievoustomato @phnt ngl man it would be so fun to walk into the store and just slap down 7k and be like "give me the best one"
haha
haha
@warmbeverageenjoyer @phnt @mischievoustomato you can do stuff like plug a keyboard and such into linux but you end up working with stuff like that to get it to work
@ins0mniak @warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato Yeah, it's very flexible in a way that you can play 4 different things out of each output, but it ends up being a bit complicated.
Very nice for audio people though.

@phnt @warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato Once you figure it out its pretty neat but its got a learning curve.
Its a blast tho, plugging a guitar or something in to make music.

@ins0mniak @phnt "genius bar i need your strongest macbook"
@phnt @mischievoustomato I think they got rid of that.

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato the last time I went to an Apple Store it was super busy. I got helped quick though.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato Yeah the one by me is in the mall. So like theres a thousand people that just go in to check things out. Its hard to get their attention.
@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato when I got my Mac mini I did the thing where they throw it in an Uber and deliver it the same day. That was really nice except the Nissan Altima stank of weed and so did the box the computer came in.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato oh id didnt know they did that.
thats kind of cool, get a mac and maybe a pizza.
dude...every uber in Alexandria straight reeks of weed lol

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato I don’t know if they offer it everywhere but it’s like same day delivery for $10 extra or something here.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato I mean we have everything else here so I assume its available.
I get sketched out walking out with a big bag that has an apple logo on it man.
someone could just run up behind you and snag it.

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato I assume if the pothead uber driver ran off with your stuff it’d be tracked or something.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato oh yeah they could figure that out quick Id assume.
Last time I bought something there I jammed it in my backpack lol. like I ruined the box making it fit.
I was walking to the metro with a big rectangle shaped bag on my back lol

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato Yeah it’s awkward. I actually had my MacBook shipped the same day too using that. It’s $9 not $10.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato my last one I had shipped. Thing is the front desk in my building is a bit weird. You have to pick up your packages from them. They've occasional lost things lol.
theres one little Mexican dude that is just on it right? like he never fucks up but sometimes they get people that are temps or whatever.
theres one little Mexican dude that is just on it right? like he never fucks up but sometimes they get people that are temps or whatever.
@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato We have a system called Package Conceirge but the shipping companies either just leave packages in the the lobby to be stolen or put them in the locked room and don’t check them in so you can’t get to them without management letting you in.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato Yeah thats kind of what ours is, but they have a check in system..thing is its not a good one really.
like they get a package and they're supposed to put it in the computer which sends you an email to pick it up.
doesn't do any good if they put the wrong apartment number in lol

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato That’s what we have here. You have to punch in your code or scan a barcode from the email to get in.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato Ours isn't that good. You have to go bug them to go get it out of the back room.
Last Christmas some homeless dude got in the building and they found him behind the counter ripping open peoples boxes lol

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato Some guy here had his box of cat litter from Chewy stolen out of the lobby. I sure as fuck don’t want an expensive ass Mac sitting down there all day.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato Oh 100 man, Thats happened here.
During covid they were just letting amazon dump the packages in the room with the mailboxes lol. People were just on the honor system. Im pretty on things as far as tracking my packages but that was ridiculous.

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato I obsessively track my deliveries to make sure they don’t stay down there too long.
@gray @phnt @mischievoustomato Oh same man, I always make sure im home when I get something too. Ill go down and immediately grab it.
Im in the city so that's just how I think about everything.
I've mistakenly got other people's packages and I always make sure to get them where they're supposed to be.
One guy was surprised by that. "thats really decent of you"
I mean thats what youre supposed to do

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato I've been researching a new rig to build and realized my wish for medium-high hardware with a back-connect motherboard + full NVME storage setup will probably hit 1500$ comfortably, and that's without even including a GPU, which will need to be AMD because Nvidia on Linux still sucks although it has done away with the kernel module drama
Kinda depressing, really. Those SSD storage prices are not dropping at all

@ins0mniak @phnt @mischievoustomato Data center storage devices are good, but way too overpriced for the average Joe
There's some mid-high quality stuff being made for consumer-client side, but it's still 150$ for a 2 TB device quite easily, not to mention you need to find those that will not bork on a power loss event which will be a challenge in and out of itself
It can't be that I need to whip out almost 500$ for 2 4 TB NVME drives which don't even have full power loss protection and barely hit 1000 TBW
Add to that that you need to whip out at minimum 400$ for an half-decent GPU (But only if you're really lucky, that is), and we're already hitting 1000$ just between GPUs and storage.

@vokainen099 @phnt @mischievoustomato Well ho much is your personal use case?
For me I use about 12tb local storage, Ill probably upgrade that at some point.
I can't rationalize anything bigger unless I was doing some major homebrew project.

@vokainen099 @ins0mniak @mischievoustomato What will you even do with 8TB of fast SSD storage? I can't think of any usecase for me.
@evgandr @ins0mniak Not really, mostly because it's close to that. Like my nickname for Asus is Ausschuß which is a German word for a defective or unsaleable product. Just like the kind of product that Asus usually makes.
@mint @vokainen099 @ins0mniak @mischievoustomato Are RUM indexes at least noticeably better than GIN. I'm thinking about enabling them, but first I would have to create a package for RUM first.
