@cell I'm very tempted to consider the move to Linux, but the last time I tried, it went catastropically bad, and I know Winblows would make it a one-way trip

Run Lunix in a virtual machine until you are sure it can do everything you need

Then if you are worried, buy a new drive, swap it in, and install Lunix on that

Your Windows drive will still be there if Lunix does not work out

I've got one machine where I do a lot of my routine stuff in a VM running Linux on top of windows 11. Media can be a little dodgy since it needs to pass sound through but besides that it's perfect.

Someday I will get back to my ideal, which is a FreeBSD machine running virtual boxes for Windows XP through 10, with another for Lunix and a playground so I can try stuff like Plan 9 or TempleOS.

Before his life melted down, Prole Destroyer had something like this, an OpenBSD machine with virtual machines for Windows 11 and Arch Lunix.

Linux has come a long way. I made the jump several years ago. The biggest hurdle these days is application replacement but today as most people do just about everything in a browser that’s easier than it used to be. I was able to replace everything except one application I use for trading so I run a Win11 VM inside of Linux just for that...that’s literally all I run there so the exposure is quite limited. Everything else is outside of Windows.

iIt’s doable…it just takes planning. Think of it as a fun project. :)

@midway @amerika @cell @sj_zero I have an Nvidia card and use it for gaming as much as anything. Supposedly Nvidia's working on a fix for the DX12 performance drain, but right now that's a dealbreaker. I'm not going to spend half a grand on swapping GPUs just to get something Linux-compatible, either.

What sucks is this is the same exact problem I ran into years ago when I gave Manjaro a test run on a laptop I had.

For kicks, try to get the soundcard working

there are ways to keep windows working, at least for a while…
