Gamestop 2000 vs 2024

@DrChris thanks, I hate it

@DrChris This is what steam did.

@trekrich @DrChris nah, the console companies wanted digital to kill 2nd hand sales which was the lifeblood of games gamestop

@Jeegsy @trekrich @DrChris

Jeegsy's right.

I loved Electronic Boutique back in the day. Buybacks were cheap enough and game prices were low enough that I was able to spend the summer playing different PC games on a broke-ass high school student's money.

I went back years later, and it's like "Holy crap, these games are so expensive, and they want to buy my old ones for HOW MUCH? Forget that!" -- actually did pawn shops for a while in the ps2 era.

@DrChris
Was in there recently getting Christmas gifts. More games on the shelves than in the picture, but it was like 50-50.

@Dan_Ramos @Jeegsy @trekrich

Yes, but it also killed excitement in the industry. There being SOME scarcity of software created buzz around if you could even get a hold of a game (you had to be involved in the launch of N64 to experience it) and the industry in general.

I get why the industry went the way it did, but it has had its negative effects.

EB and Babbages were my go-to's. Our mall, which is still very full and without any real vacancies, doesn't even have a videog game store any more.
