the Sweden thing is also kind of false. it's not really a "cute but". They really appreciate it because they feel like they are losing personal identity as their language isn't relevant. But they also prefer to talk to non-swedes in English so they switch.

I think the french thing is because most peoples only interactions are in Paris and a lot of people in Paris also speak English, but if you go out of Paris at all even well to do people only speak French so they appreciate it when you try, since it's their country. It's like how you don't want some beaner to speak spic at you.

@Xenophon @KiKi88 I have friends from rural southern France and they are actually cool AF and like to mock city types the same as any American. So yeah that makes sense.
