I try to explain to some folks on X about how different Fedi is from X. I studiously avoid using the word 'intimate' being that is the faggiest word to utter outside of your marital bedroom. But the upshot is they all seem to think it's zero-sum, as if they can only have one or the other. It's weird.
I don't think anyone on FB or IG or X or TikTok looks forward to opening the timeline like here.
I think FB comes closest to long-term relationships, due largely to its emergence force-multiplying school networks.
But X is devoid of any aesthetic that evokes familiarity. IG is a shitty reel of reels. The airheads all go there. TikTok, nuff said. It's not a place to two-way communicate in any fashion.
YT has no real social network outside of comments. Linked is all bots and professional climbers.
On the other hand, with a fraction of the apparent users, the fediverse is so fun and vibrant. For the most part, the people are who are here want to be here because it's not easy compared to big Tech.
The fact that we are also starting to get sites like minds and protocols like nostr means the userbase is plenty robust to have fun.
And never will there be a shadowban or a suspension from the entire fediverse because that's not how it's architected.

@PNS the fediverse is like a bunch of neighborhoods with roads data networks possibly connecting them. Each neighborhood has its.own set of norms, and those norms might not be compatible with groups. But we're all happy with our own kind of insanity here. And most of us are not interested in anything going on at "furry-twinks.social", but we could go look if we wanted.
@PNS and then there's the folks that confuse free thought and free speech with hatred. They probably think we're a bunch of "kkk Nazi quadroons".
Fuck those guys.
And then there are the walled neighborhoods that don't talk to anyone.
Fuck those guys too.
And then there are groups that use fedi technology to do immoral things. Fuck THOSE guys with a dude in latex that's been kept in a crate for 3 months.
Not for using the tech, but for doing the immoral shit.
