im trying to install gentoo for the first time, and chose to compile the kernel instead of downloading the binary, but, fwew, this has been running for ages now o.o
@sj_zero i didn't know it'd be that long, but yeh
at 1% now :3c i should probably stop, or at least pause, the process, but i wanna see what happens :3c i think imma use the pre-compiled one next time ^^'
If it makes you feel better, my gentoo life started on a single core 800Mhz duron so I feel your pain.
@sj_zero oh, i don't really mind. but im starting to get a better idea of just how painful it must be for people doing kernel development o.o no "lemme run this quickly to see if it works", wth o.o and then people who hack on hardware without much documentation where trying things and see how it goes is basically a requirement my respect for these people and this work is seriously growing!
@ilja if you configure less stuff to be built, either into the kernel or as modules it's goes faster
make localmodconfig writes a configuration for your running system (you might miss some modules for peripherals not currently plugged in)

@eal it's really the first time im doing this, so for now i wanna see it working in "default mode" before diving deeper and wondering why certain things go wrong. but yeah, that's probably a kind of thing ill need to look into later (and getting a better idea of how these things work is indeed part of why i want to do this)
@ilja did you use all thr cores?
@xarvos yes :) but it stopped now bc it was using more power than it could get from the charger, so the laptop went to 0% charge
@ilja it’s telling you it doesn’t want gentoo on it
@xarvos it's giving me challenges to learn from
