Huge disappointment, but I'm not surprised. I was thinking about this yesterday: Meloni is a pragmatist. Pragmatism can be helpful in many situations, but true pragmatism is completely divorced from the confines of any moral principles.
So, now we see Meloni's true priority: just getting things done and bending where needed to avoid roadblocks, even when that means betraying an ally in need.
An interesting take on this --
"Meloni didn’t “end” the defense deal. She didn’t “cancel” it. She didn’t even 'block' it.
Notice the careful words: she “suspended the automatic renewal.”
Ahhhh. So, from a pragmatic point of view, what really matters is what happens when the quietly renewed agreement runs out, and maybe by that point she'll have more leverage to do the right thing?
