@lain looks like the thesis of the article is basically just “the people who seek power are usually exactly the kind of people who should never have power”, but the headline and the conclusion (that we should use a lottery system instead) were both unfortunate
@lain If you define democracy as more than just voting (which is often done) this might actually be true. People go on and on about how supposedly people are voting based on misinfo and fake news, and I think if that's true maybe we shouldn't have voting at all.
I'd much rather sacrifice voting for free speech and rule of law than the other way around.

@lain i do idly wonder if referendums would work better than representatives. they seem to work in other countries
@lain I thought loads of people define democracy broadly as anything that gives power to the people or limits the power of government, not *just* voting
@Hyolobrika okay, but what gives power to the people? When I lived in a democracy and voted, no candidate I voted for ever got elected. When I moved to a monarchy, I got most of what I wanted.
