>we need a middle ground (free speech but no assholes)
But "no assholes" is a restriction on speech. So what does "free speech" mean in that case?
I think the solution is the fact-value gap: all "is" beliefs are allowed but morals (or lack thereof) and aesthetics are moderated.

>It's easy enough to mute and move on if something really gets under your skin
It's not though. Muting is really buggy, at least on Soapbox. People's posts still show up if you go to the thread they're in.

You can be banned for saying Hitler did nothing wrong but not for saying the Holocaust never happened, for instance.

Or for saying the n-word

He never said anything about logic, just free association.

I'm not sure why you assumed I would disagree with you on that.

Snowflake

They're you but inverted

Well, apart from the fact that people like you are more likely to block/mute/ban things you disagree with whereas people like them are more likely to just act really aggressive about it

I meant you're the same kind of person, just from opposite sides of the political aisle

BTW, you probably don't want to follow me. I have some views you might not like.

Yw

Are you sure you don't want to confirm first though?

Federation is kind of like centralisation though. Your identity is tied to a server and therefore you are subject to the admin’s whims. I should be more active on Nostr.

What if the server's reach is smaller, not due to their 4chan behaviour, but the behaviour of the others on the server.

Also, I think you might have missed my point, or maybe I just don't understand what you're saying.

I think moderation feeds / subjective moderation are a better solution to that than forced adminship.

Maybe not, come to think of it. But on fedi if you get banned from a server, you don't automatically get to move smoothly. Only if the admin is nice or you leave of your own accord.
Tech should be architected so that you don't have to trust admins to be nice.

Also, you can subscribe to multiple feeds and you don't have to have a feed at all if you don't want to.

>however the population of people unjustly banned with a mountain of followers is quite small
If there were more, would you hear about them?

It's the other post I made to you about how you can't move smoothly to a new instance if you get banned maliciously.

Also, you don't need a "mountain of followers" for it to be annoying.

I don't care that much about high follow count successful accounts lol

Maybe it will get fixed in the future. I know some people are working on it. But in the meantime, there are already platforms where it doesn't exist.
