Adversary of Fediblock

Accept that I'll probably say something you don't like and I'll give you the same benefit, and maybe we can find some truth about the world.

Ah... Is the Alliteration clever or stupid? Don't answer that, I sort of know the answer already...

re: Discord alternatives
@craigmaloney you press the "create account" button.

re: Discord alternatives
@craigmaloney https://app.element.io

It's a web app and also an app for iOS or Android. Really polished.

re: Discord alternatives
@craigmaloney I don't really know what you mean. Element is about as simple as you're going to get, I'd argue in a lot of ways it's more straightforward than discord.

@FediFollows not sure if you've learned about lotide, but it's a lightweight link aggregator with federation. I started up an instance think it's a project that deserves more love. https://sr.ht/~vpzom/lotide/

@alex @curtis if 2021 has taught me anything, it's that we need to get out of the slave mentality of wanting someone else to provide for us. The internet does not require big tech. Big Tech does require us. I've been loving my time on the fediverse, and I've had my searx instance as my default search engine for months without Google being involved at all.

Every single politician could very easily open up their own instances of whatever they need, and they wouldn't have to worry about anybody kicking them off because you can't be kicked off your own server. I don't like big tech, but this problem is clearly not something that we need to regulate away.

@FBICatgirl Who would willingly live like that?

re: Discord alternatives
@craigmaloney There's some good bridges out there, so you could conceivably provide access to all 3: XMPP, Matrix, and Discord, and let people use the one they want to access one common room. I'm just waiting for Matrix Conduit to hit 1.0 then I intend to try doing this on one of the programming chat rooms I frequent.

@xeno @sjw I might watch one episode just because "what the fuck?"

@borzoi the mental disconnect between "nobody who did it is even alive anymore" and "we need to punish everybody because this thing happened" is a tad ridiculous.

Growing up the argument against being racist towards black people becase of all the crime committed by black people is "every black person isn't to blame when individuals commit crimes", but magically that goes out the window when it's a crime they want to punish based on race.

@Bajax @borzoi @graf I spent a lot of time after spending a lot of comforting time in physics when I thought you could find something like that, an equation you could prove comes back with how to lead an objectively moral life. After a long time I realized that life is subjective and you sort of have to eyeball it -- formal ethics are just an ex post facto sanity check rather than a method to derive your ethics.

@sjw Sounds about right tbh. Around 2012 I bought a mid-spec gaming laptop, and it was just fine until just a few years ago. A desktop with a fully powered video card (mine had a Geforce GT645M) probably wouldn't have run up against the same limitations and generally video games haven't progressed much in terms of system requirements. Hell, I've got an RTX now and I think I own 4-5 games that even support it years after I bought the thing.

@denza252 If fewer current redditors want to use the fediverse in general, I consider that a win for the good guys.

@acacia227 @borzoi @graf Was it invented by a Jew before or after "Mind your own business" was a motto imprinted on the Fugio cent of 1787?

@graf There's so many other more conventional and less drastic things we don't let kids do because they're not ready to make decisions that set the course of their entire lives, it's insane that this would be the one thing we let them do.

You don't even need to get into discussion of the merits or demerits of the decision to realize that it's not a decision for children to be making.

@graf I don't know why "I don't give a fuck what you do, just leave me out of it and we'll get along fine" became "problematic".

@alex @JoYo I had one of the plant based meat burgers last year, it tasted exactly like mushed up chick peas. 0/10 would not purchase again, especially since it cost like 4 times as much as an equivalent beef burger.

@jeffcliff Although it'd be difficult to prevent it from being abused, I tend to agree with you. If people could take days off when they're sick then they wouldn't come to work sick, and that would help reduce the amount of illness transmitted through workplaces.

I've come to work sick, almost everyone I know has done it, because the bank doesn't accept "doing the right thing" in lieu of cash.

@georgia @JSDorn @AnimeTradCath Actually, you've got it exactly backwards.

It's nobody's problem but yours.

And you know, a lot of men find it really tough that the world ignores them and they have to make it through life all alone and on their own, and you know what? That's nobody's problem but theirs.

Someday you're going to hit a point where you stop getting all the attention, and you're going to realize your problem has resolved itself and now you have a new problem, and it will still be your problem to deal with.

The world doesn't care about you. Doesn't matter who you are, that's just a fact of life. The only person you can rely on is yourself, and the sooner you realize that the better your life will be.
