Dalton's law states that in a mixture of non-reacting gases, the total pressure exerted is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases. This empirical law was observed by John Dalton in 1801 and published in 1802. Dalton's law is related to the ideal gas laws. Essentially, the air is the same as 80kPa nitrogen and 20kPa oxygen.
This doesn't just apply to gasses in a vacuum, but also gasses in a liquid. Dissolved oxygen in water, for example (which is how fish breathe) exists in the interstitial spaces between water molecules.

@picandor I never understood the whole "save water" thing. You take it out of a lake, purify it, then purify it again before sending it back to the lake. It's a renewable resource.
